Creative Writing for Young Adults

May 20-June 24, Mondays 6:30-8:00 (This is a 5-week class, but we have included one alternate date to accommodate final exams.)

Are you head-over-heels for Harry Potter? Hungering for more Hunger Games? If you love reading Young Adult literature and are eager to try writing your own stories, this introductory course is for you.

The class is part book group, part writing workshop. Students will read and discuss a contemporary YA novel and will also share their own writing. In the process, they will learn about writing mechanics, plot, voice, setting, characterization, and more.

At the end of the class, students will read a selection from their work at Books With a Past for an audience of friends and families.

Instructor Emily K. Parker is a writer who lives in Baltimore, Maryland. A Princeton graduate, she is now a second-year MFA student in The Writing Seminars program at Johns Hopkins University. She teaches an undergraduate writing workshop each semester as well as a popular Intersession course called “Baltimore in Film, Fiction & TV.”

Age Range: 13-15 (8th-10th grade)
Time Frame: Five weeks, 90 minutes per class
Class Size: 6-8 students
Cost: $75 (Fee includes book to be used in the workshop)

Women’s Fiction Writing Group

Join this small workshop for amateur authors who want to focus on stories by and about women. Learn how to develop your narrative voice, create interesting characters, and structure compelling plots. Students will share their work and discuss stories with other new writers, and receive personalized feedback from the instructor. In each class, we will workshop stories, experiment with brief creative writing exercises, and discuss selections from Runaway by Alice Munro.

At the end of the workshop, Books With A Past will host an informal reading and reception for the class, family and friends.
